Observation Over Judgment
A case study is described, not scored. Nobody leaves a session having been told their spending was wise or foolish. What they leave with is a clearer picture of what was actually happening in a specific moment.
The Method
The premise is simple, though not always comfortable: most of us already know the difference between a need and a want, at least when we're not the ones deciding. The series is built around noticing what happens when we are.
Rules tell you what to do next time. Observation tells you what you actually did this time. The series is built almost entirely on the second kind of information.
Four ideas run through every session, in place of a single rulebook.
A case study is described, not scored. Nobody leaves a session having been told their spending was wise or foolish. What they leave with is a clearer picture of what was actually happening in a specific moment.
The words "need" and "want" get used carefully, and often provisionally, rather than as fixed categories stamped onto every purchase.
What counts as a want for one household might be closer to a genuine need in another, depending on circumstances the rule never accounts for.
Sessions are guided by a facilitator who asks questions and holds space for disagreement, rather than delivering a fixed conclusion at the end.
Rather than presenting conclusions, the facilitator introduces a scenario and lets the room sit with it. Questions are open: what would need to be true for this to count as a need? What would need to change for it to feel like a want instead? The facilitator's job is to keep the conversation honest, not to settle it.
Scenarios are drawn from recognizable moments: a grocery aisle, a shared calendar reminder, a browser tab left open overnight. Nothing dramatic. That ordinariness is deliberate. Extreme examples are easy to judge from a distance. Ordinary ones require participants to actually look at themselves.
Not a comparison of better and worse. Just two approaches, described plainly, so the difference is visible.
Starts with a fixed principle: a percentage of income, a waiting period before purchases, a list of categories to avoid. The rule is meant to apply broadly, regardless of the specific household applying it.
Works well as a starting point. Tends to strain when real circumstances don't match the assumptions built into the rule.
Starts with a specific, real decision and asks what was actually happening: the timing, the mood, the context, the people involved.
Produces fewer tidy conclusions. Tends to feel more accurate to the people describing their own situation.
Nothing here is designed to make anyone feel monitored. The sessions are closer to a shared thinking exercise than a review of anyone's habits.
